3.) Other Awards, Recognition, Community Service:

William Blount High School has about 200 students in the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) program. This program teaches leadership and the basic character traits of honesty, integrity and responsibility. It also stresses team work, physical fitness, wellness and aerospace science. I have been active in AFJROTC for both high school years. Within AFJROTC there is an honor club called Kitty Hawk Air Society. Only the top cadets are eligible and are selected by the faculty and I was selected. By the end of my freshman year, the members of Kitty Hawk Air Society selected me for an uncommon honor. I was voted to the position of Administration Officer. This is special recognition for a freshman. I am one of three sophomore cadets in AFJROTC to hold the rank of second lieutenant which is the highest rank possible for a sophomore.

Besides school, I believe I should be an active participant in our local church and its mission. After the Little River flooded in the spring of 1994, Rev. Jeff Wadley, Fairview UMC, led us in the clean up of damaged houses. I also participated with Rev. Wadley in a summer church mission trip to southwest Virginia to make repairs on houses. I have volunteered to help my neighbors with chores and, along with my parents, assisted poor families in need and during Christmas. I have also been active in YoungLife, a spiritual outreach program for unchurched youth. I attended a week-long YoungLife camp at Wendy Gap, North Carolina in June 1997 where I saw the servant-leader model in action with Rev. Tim Teague and others. It featured many interesting learning experiences including a "ropes course", horse back riding, "go-carts", a "zip line" ride into the lake, a surprise carnival, a western-style barbeque along with group singing, praise and worship services. This camp was the most fun I have ever had in one week. YoungLife leaders work hard to help young people experience hope and the abundant life from the unconditional love offered through Jesus Christ.
